There used to be a time when you’d have your car tuned up every September. If not, you’d have it towed in to the shop around November. One way or another, you were getting that car tuned up!
Today’s cars aren’t like that. They no longer have points; many don’t even have distributors. And they work with electronic fuel injection and direct ignition, so even as the parts wear, the engine still runs pretty good.
The car performance is so good, in fact, that many people are of the opinion that their car doesn’t need a tune-up at all.
They’re wrong.
Vehicle Maintenance Schedule
Today’s cars still need an occasional tune-up. They don’t need it every year, but they still have spark plugs and filters. Many still use a PCV valve, and some have plug wires. Those parts need to be replaced; usually around 50,000 or 60,000 miles… some manufacturers recommend 100,000 miles!
What’s more, those new fuel injection systems need to be serviced about once a year to clean out the dirt and gunk that builds up over time. Those systems work on clearances so precise they’re measured in microns; it doesn’t take a lot of buildup to affect car performance.
